Why are we still using minted coins and printed paper currency?  We live in a very modern and highly digitized society. 

What would be the pros and cons of ending the use of hard currency?  Would it be a mistake to go totally digital? 

Everyone would need some device that links to a nationwide system. 

Smartphones are a logical choice.  Not everyone has one, though. 

Shoppers and bill-payers might be totally fine with putting an end to hard currency.
